Even-numbered iterations will produce their modulation products, baseband and high frequency, as reflected emissions from the target.

It is caused by unwanted modulation products which arise from the transmission of the carrier signal, and appear in the form of a rectified baseband that interferes with the lower sideband of the carrier.

Use of multiplier ICs means that the modulation products are largely confined to sum and difference frequency of inputs ( unless the circuit is overdriven ), rather than the much more complicated products of the rectifier circuit.

This effect still holds when the emitter and the reflector are not parallel, though due to diffraction effects the baseband products of each iteration will originate from a different location each time, with the originating location corresponding to the path of the reflected high frequency self-modulation products.
